SEDESA Provides Free Health Services to Over 31,000 Patients in Hard-to-Access Areas in Mexico City

  • In 2023, 180,217 promotion and prevention actions were carried out for a population of 31,074 patients who live in locations that are difficult to access or who are removed from Health Centers and Medical Units.
  • The objective is to provide promotion, prevention, medical and dental care services to people who live in areas of high population density, difficult access or low human development index, through itinerant health teams and local health committees.

The Ministry of Health of Mexico City (SEDESA), through the Public Health Services, provides free health services for promotion, prevention, medical and dental care to people who live in locations with high population density, in areas that are difficult to access or have a low rate of urban development, through Health Caravans.

There are 10 medical health units that are equipped with a deployable tent and each one is made up of a doctor, a nurse, a dentist and a health promoter, and they serve seven municipalities: Gustavo A. Madero, Iztapalapa, Cuajimalpa of Morelos, Álvaro Obregón, Tlalpan, La Magdalena Contreras and Tláhuac.

In the Caravans the service is free, the patient is treated immediately and is given the medication prescribed by the doctor, while in the dentistry service the procedure is performed at the place of visit.

The medical service is provided in the patients’ homes; Their diseases are monitored and monitored, laboratory services and health promotion actions are offered.

The Mobile Medical Units are made up of:

Type I: A doctor, a nurse and a versatile promoter.

Type II: A doctor, a dentist, a nurse and a versatile promoter. The unit has a medical office; The control and monitoring of patients, laboratory, electrocardiogram taking and health promotion and prevention actions are carried out.

Type III: A doctor, a dentist, a nurse and a versatile promoter. The unit has a medical and dental office. It has an antenna installed with video conferencing equipment.

It should be noted that the Health Caravans work daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in places away from the Health Centers.

In 2023, 28,802 medical and dental consultations were granted, as well as 180,217 promotion and prevention actions to a population of 31,074 patients who live in locations that are difficult to access or who are removed from Health Centers and the Medical Units.

It should be noted that in 18 locations with high and very high marginalization, 12,233 integrated detections, prostate antigen, dyslipidemia (cholesterol and triglyceride studies), and addictions, among others, were also carried out.

In the Mobile Health Units, 22,825 medical consultations were attended free of charge, that is, two consultations per doctor hour, with a productivity of 12 consultations per day; In dental care there were 5,977 consultations, that is, one consultation per hour, and dentist with 35,000 preventive actions and 2,559 curative actions.
