NEW YORK | Security was tightened Sunday in Times Square, New York, following a bomb threat, which was however unfounded.
Threatening comments referring to this famous place in the Big Apple were relayed on social media and the authorities were made aware. However, the head of the New York Police Department’s counterterrorism unit, James R. Waters, assured Sunday afternoon on Twitter that the threat was not considered credible.
“As a precaution, you will see an increase in the presence of the police in various places in New York and Times Square”, he added all the same.
For his part, the governor of the State of New York, Andrew Cuomo, denounced, in a press release, a “despicable and cowardly act aimed at instilling fear and panic within our community”.
He also announced that a state police investigation was underway, in conjunction with that of New York City.
