As a result of the attempt by two men on Thursday morning to damage the Israel flag that was displayed in front of the Graz town hall, it will now be taken down at night. In addition, the town hall security service keeps an eye on it, and the flag with the Star of David changed place with the Austrian flag. The security manager of the city of Graz, Gilbert Sandner, confirmed this on Friday in response to an APA request. The location was swapped to make access more difficult for possible perpetrators.
The measures were taken because two men had used a knife to damage the Israel flag that was displayed on one of the four flagpoles in front of the Graz town hall. The two had climbed onto scaffolding to get to the flag. Police officers intervened and pursued the two. One escaped, the other – a Syrian (17) living in Graz – was temporarily arrested.
Originally, the flag on the flagpole just to the right of the main portal of the town hall was quite inaccessible. Then, as part of the construction of the Christmas market on the main square, a metal scaffolding was erected right next to the flagpole, which carries supply lines to the Christmas market. By changing the Israeli flag to the outer mast, another approach is to be prevented.
The 17-year-old, who was temporarily arrested after a brief escape, has now been released again after several interrogations. He has so far remained buttoned up and has not confessed to the crime, said a police spokesman when asked by APA. In any case, he will be reported to the Graz public prosecutor’s office for damage to property, denigration of symbols and incitement.
