Security measures announced for July 4th celebration

The secretary of the Department of Public Security (DSP), Pedro Janer reported on Friday details about the work plan that will be implemented this weekend during the celebration of the independence of the United States.

In addition, it is worth highlighting the importance of the use of masks to prevent contagion and the spread of viruses. The Officers that make up the DSP are prepared and alert to attend any emergency that is reported. Likewise, staff of the Police Bureau will be patrolling to enforce the Executive Order and ensure the safety of the people, “said the official in written communication.

For his part, the Commissioner of the Police, Henry Escalera Rivera explained that “members of the Puerto Rico Police, including the personnel of the United Nations Rapid Action Forces (FURA) negotiated, will be deployed on the beaches, resorts and roads to safeguard lives and properties to regret. As part of the security measures, we will have helicopters, boats and watercraft available to increase surveillance on the beaches and preventive patrols by air, sea and land, ”said Commissioner Escalera.

Escalera explained that they will have outstanding personnel on the beaches of the metropolitan area, Arecibo, Mayagüez, Cabo Rojo, Guánica, Ponce, Rincón, Humacao, among other coastal towns. The police presence in the Ceiba Motorboat Terminal will also be reinforced, as well as in the municipalities of Vieques and Culebra, which traditionally receive an increase in the flow of visitors. Likewise, she explained that the Security Plan includes personnel assigned to Highway Patrol to attend traffic on public roads.

“The uniformed will intervene with drivers who are under the influence of alcoholic beverages, who do not wear a seat belt and those who do not carry children in their protective seat, among other violations of Traffic Law 22. In addition, those who misuse the cell phone while driving will be arrested, ”said the Commissioner.

Janer highlighted that the operational areas of the Bureau for Emergency Management and Disaster Administration (NMEAD) maintain their coordination with municipal agencies to support incidents. Staff from the Medical Emergency Corps Bureau and the Fire Department Bureau are also available to respond to any emergency. The 9-1-1 Emergency Systems, Special Investigations and Forensic Sciences Bureau will continue to operate as usual.

“Citizens are encouraged to have any information related to the commission of a crime, report confidentially to 343-2020 and if you need to report an emergency, you should call or send a text message to 9-1-1 to channel the response of the necessary agencies ”, concluded Secretary Janer.
