A security guard is in critical condition after being shot in the back of the head while trying to break up a fight at a high school football game Saturday afternoon in Utica.
About a dozen people were fighting in the parking lot of Thomas R. Proctor High School when at least two shots were fired, according to a statement from the Utica Police Department.
The New York Post reported that one of the two security guards was taken to hospital. He is in critical condition.
Before the altercation, the group was removed from the game by another security guard, according to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams.
“The officer suspected something was wrong with this group and refused to let them into the stadium,” he said.
The attack may be gang-related. The suspect who fired the shot remains at large. Utica police are continuing their investigation.
The shooting is the second in a few days in the United States. During a high school football game last week in Louisiana, a student was killed and a woman was injured. An 18-year-old man was arrested in this case.
Last August, a 16-year-old who was a spectator at a football game in Oklahoma also lost his life after being shot.
