Mexican security forces killed 11 gunmen after a shootout in the north of the country on Wednesday, authorities said, the latest incident in a series of cartel-related clashes.

A man was detained and several weapons and vehicles were seized, the Nuevo León state government said in a statement.

The security forces began an operation with air and ground patrols in search of the perpetrators of an attack on a local command, according to the same source, which reported no victims among the agents.

Later, the troops detected a convoy of approximately eight trucks driven by armed people, and after a chase a shootout occurred in the direction of the municipality of Los Ramones, east of Monterrey.

“The result was 11 criminals killed,” the authorities reported.

The detainee, 30 years old, was seen on the road “wearing camouflage clothing, a long weapon and tactical equipment,” the statement said.

Clashes between security forces and members of drug cartels are common in Mexico.

The spiral of violence linked to organized crime has left more than 450,000 murders and some 100,000 missing in Mexico since 2006, according to official figures.
