On Friday evening, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting that Algeria had called last weekend to discuss developments in the situation in the Middle East region, especially the upsurge of confusion in Lebanon.
In his speech during the session, Lebanon’s Foreign Minister described the bombing of thousands of mobile communication devices this week in his country as a “terrorist” attack and held Israel responsible.
Abdullah Bouhabib described the explosions that killed dozens in different parts of Lebanon over two days as “an unprecedented form of warfare in its brutality and terrorism,” adding that they “target thousands of people of of all ages doing their work in their homes, in the streets, at their jobs, in shopping centers.” “It’s just terrorism.”
Bouhabib emphasized that Israel does not comply with international and humanitarian law and the resolutions of the Security Council, because no one holds it accountable for what it does, which encourages it to disregard the resolutions of international legitimacy, and he will not accept this as a fait accompli, and he cannot be released from accountability, as he said.
He said that Israel is causing a devastating regional war that surpasses any other war in terms of weapons and the number of casualties, stressing that Lebanon wants justice, a diplomatic solution, and those who have returned the movement, and that he does not want war.
Bou Habib appealed to the members of the Security Council to stand on the right side of history by supporting Lebanon, saying that the credibility of the Security Council is involved in dealing with Israeli attacks based on deadly technology, which ‘ explain that after Israel’s attacks against innocent civilians in Lebanon, no one in the world is safe anymore.
For his part, the representative of Israel Danny Danon accused the United Nations of becoming “difficult” in criticizing Israel, and there are other conflicts in the world besides what is happening with Israel .
He said, we will do “whatever it takes” to protect our citizens, and unless Hezbollah withdraws “north of the Litani,” Israel will not stand idly by.
Danon said, “Hezbollah uses civilian homes and UNIFIL bases as areas to launch weapons, and uses military control forces as shields to hide behind. Just like Hamas does with civilians .”
He emphasized that “the Lebanese Foreign Minister speaks as a representative of Hezbollah, but we can sit together to talk about reconciliation, but the problem is that the Lebanese government is powerless before Hezbollah, and the government cannot prevent to stop Hezbollah from dragging Lebanon into it. war.”
He directed his speech to the Lebanese Foreign Minister, saying: “You have allowed Hezbollah to turn into a state within a state, and you must act instead of blaming us for responding to the Hezbollah does.”
The representative of Israel confirmed that his country “defends itself and does not violate international law, and we will not allow Hezbollah to threaten our citizens and use Lebanese territory to launch missiles.” “
Israel’s representative called on the Security Council to act to “classify Hezbollah and the Revolutionary Guard as terrorist organizations.” “
He said Israel is “fighting terrorism” and fighting all “forces that want to destabilize the region.”
Algeria “accused” and Washington “defends”
Ammar Benjameh, Algeria’s representative to the Security Council, warned that Israel is “pushing the region to war,” and that its attacks today, Friday, in Beirut prove that they are “not interested in the peace.”
Bin Jama said, “The recent attack by Israel targeting communication devices in Lebanon is a war crime,” explaining that dozens of Lebanese were killed in an operation to remotely target communication devices, ” and the person who committed the crime is well known.”
He said Israel was threatening to launch a “full-scale war” on Lebanon, and Israel’s attacks on Lebanon show “non-compliance” with international laws, holding the Security Council responsible for ” adhere to the principles and charters of the United Nations” and that it must implement its decisions.
The United Nations Council called for an “end to the occupation” because it would pave the way for lasting peace and stability in the region.
For his part, Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that an all-out war in the region “would not benefit” anyone, and that escalating rhetoric will only lead to more destruction.
He said that the rules of engagement in international law are binding and prohibit targeting civilians, even if gunmen are among them.
“We urge Israel and Hezbollah to stop hostilities,” Türk said.
As for the US representative in the Security Council, Linda Jefferson, she defended Israel’s right to “defend itself”.
She said Hezbollah’s attacks “support” Iran and Hamas’ campaign to attack Israel and that Israel “has the right to defend itself.”
Linda said that a diplomatic solution is the way that the displaced Lebanese and Israelis can return to their homes, and we will continue to work towards this goal.
She explained that it was the “Hamas attacks” on October 7 that “bombed” stability on the Blue Line.
She emphasized that an extended conflict in the Middle East “can be avoided.”
The president of the UN Security Council on Wednesday called for an emergency session on Friday to discuss the attacks in Lebanon and the dangerous situation in the Middle East, explaining that the session came at the request of Algeria.
Preliminary investigations by Lebanese authorities showed that the communications devices that exploded this week “were booby-trapped before reaching Lebanon,” Lebanon’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations said in a letter to the Security Council seen AFP Thursday.
37 people were killed and nearly three thousand others were injured as a result of the explosion of “pagers” devices on Tuesday and then on Wednesday wireless communication devices used by party members, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
Israel has yet to claim responsibility for the blasts, but Hezbollah and the Lebanese government accused Israel of “full responsibility” for the blasts.
The Lebanese mission said the bombings were “unprecedented brutality” and undermined diplomatic efforts to end the fighting in Gaza and southern Lebanon.
Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip on October 7, the focus of Israeli military operations has been on Gaza.
However, the border area with Lebanon sees a daily exchange of bombings between the Israeli army and Hezbollah, which led to the death of hundreds in Lebanon, dozens in Israel, and the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians on both sides.
Hezbollah claims that the cross-border bombing operations are “front support” for Gaza during the war in the Strip.
