Monumental Mural Celebrates Diversity and Secularism at French College
A striking new mural, spanning 31 meters long and 2 meters high, graces the courtyard of a French college, serving as a powerful symbol of diversity and secularism. The project, a collaborative effort between artist inkOj and students, transforms a simple wall into a vibrant testament to unity in a diverse community.
The creation process involved a series of workshops led by artist élia “Orlk” Hocdé, designed to engage students in the project’s meaning. “The goal was that they adhere to the project and that they discover a technique that is not just tagging or graffiti,” explains inkOj, whose name is Esperanto for “inks.”
The workshops focused on exploring secularism through the lens of street art. “We made them think about works, then I asked them to draw a Marianne of today, as they imagine her,” inkOj explains. The resulting designs, inspired by student contributions, feature four distinct marianne figures—one for each grade level at the college—each with unique hairstyles and symbolic elements.
The faces, devoid of nostrils, eyes, and eyebrows, are intentionally ambiguous. ”These are expressions, which are appreciated differently depending on the culture,” notes inkOj. The color palette is limited to the blue, white, and red of the French flag, except for one face inspired by Son Goku from the Dragon Ball manga, which faces in the opposite direction from the others. “It means that we have the right to disagree and that we can turn to others to let them know,” the artist explains.
Between each face, three panels display the French national motto, complemented by the word “sorority.” A ribbon, inspired by Ukrainian ribbons designed by a Ukrainian exchange student, connects the nine panels.”It is indeed inspired by Ukrainian ribbons, designed by a hosted Ukrainian student,” underlines inkOj.
Véronique Dubois, the school principal, expressed her excited approval of the finished work. “The fresco symbolizes the diversity of our audience and living together. Secularism is a cement for living together,” she stated.
The mural stands as a vibrant example of how art can foster dialogue and understanding, promoting a sense of community and shared identity within a diverse student body. Its powerful message resonates far beyond the college walls, offering a compelling visual representation of the importance of inclusivity and respect.
