Doña Pilar Cancela Rodríguez, member of the Federal Committee and secretary responsible for Foreign Affairs in the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), led this Sunday -in the city of Caracas- the discussion “Democratic Memory Law”, where hundreds of descendants gathered Europeans who today seek to obtain the nationality of this country.
At the meeting that took place at the Hermandad Gallega, Cancela Rodríguez asserted that her visit corresponds to the fact that today they are experiencing a very exciting moment for the Spanish community abroad, regarding two historical rights claims that correspond to all descendants who are outside the mother country.
In this regard, the spokesperson for the PSOE and promoter of this legal instrument, announced that they deal, firstly, with the repeal of the requested vote; and on the other hand, she referred to the claim of the nationality of the grandchildren of Spaniards abroad. According to her, she said in statements to the press, the former prevented the exercise of a fundamental right.
In the meeting with the press, prior to the event, where he patiently clarified all the doubts of those present who came from Caracas, and the states of Lara, Carabobo and Aragua; Cancela specified that the Historical Memory Law of 2007 took important steps, but that there were a series of assumptions to attend to and that is what this new legal instrument that Latin America promotes today does.
«It is true that the Democratic Memory Law does not only refer to the national issue. It is a matter of resolving a historical debt and reinforcing our own democracy, over a time that was very hard. The wounds of the past are not closed by forgetting, but quite the opposite, it is by vindicating memory and restoring rights », he emphasized.
Before concluding, Cancela said that today in the country there are about 250,000 Spaniards registered in the Consulates, this has a multiplier effect that benefits many young people. «We want them to continue to be linked to Spain and to maintain these ties of the soul, of parents and grandparents who have recounted their experiences. It is a way of maintaining one’s existence with a memory of affection », he pointed out.
