On December 16, a secret meeting of representatives of Ukraine, the G7 countries and some states of the global South took place in Saudi Arabia, at which the Ukrainian “peace formula” was discussed. About it reports Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the meeting.
Among the participants from the countries of the global South, Bloomberg names representatives of India, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. China, Brazil and the UAE, which attended previous summits, did not send their representatives to this meeting. According to Bloomberg sources, Brazil sent a written statement – but what it said was not specified.
The agency writes that the meeting was made secret, in particular, for the comfort of its participants. According to Bloomberg sources, this format allowed for a freer and more frank discussion of peace conditions and the principles of potential interaction between Ukraine and Russia in the future. The countries participating in the meeting were mainly represented by national security advisers.
The parties did not achieve “significant progress,” as the publication writes. According to Bloomberg, countries of the global South are calling for direct interaction with Russia, while Ukraine and the G7 countries believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not showing any signs of desire for negotiations.
The White House National Security Council declined to comment. Ukraine and Saudi Arabia also did not respond to requests for comment.
At the end of December 2023, The New York Times, citing Russian and American officials, wrote that Putin, starting in September, through various diplomatic channels, was “giving signals” about his readiness to begin negotiations on a ceasefire in Ukraine.
In early January, John Kirby, the White House National Security Council’s strategic communications coordinator, said Putin was “definitely not acting like a man willing to negotiate,” despite press reports.
