Secret Operation Uncovered: Smuggling European Microchips into Russia

The Financial Times writes that a secret operation to smuggle European microchips into Russia, which are critical for defense technology, has been uncovered.

“Marc Rocchi, the former CEO of French microchip company Ommic, was deeply involved in this operation, assisting Russian agent Maxim Ermakov in smuggling chips needed for Russian defense applications, including electronic warfare systems. Despite realizing the illegality of the operation, Rocky continued to engage in this business in order to maintain the financial viability of Ommic,” leads excerpts from Briefly article.

According to the newspaper, in Ommic’s dealings with Istok, “Western governments face challenges in combating such smuggling operations.” The Russian strategy included using global trade routes to move restricted technologies. Despite recent crackdowns and sanctions, such networks remain active and adaptive, finding new ways to continue their activities. The case “sheds light on the ongoing battle between Western export controls and Russian intelligence efforts to acquire sensitive technology,” the Financial Times writes.
