Secret Meeting Between US and Iran in Oman Revealed: Talks on Houthi Attacks and Nuclear Program

Senior United States diplomats and Iran apparently they were known to have met secretly in Oman. This meeting came as Washington tried to ask Tehran for help in stopping attacks by the Houthi rebel group in the Red Sea.

This secret conversation was even reported to have taken place last January.

The top Middle East official at the White House and Iran’s envoy at the US State Department reportedly led the US delegation that met with the Iranian team, led by the Deputy Secretary of State Iran Ali Bagheri Kani.

Reported by Al Arabiya, Thursday (14/3/2024), according to a Financial Times media report, which quoted unnamed US and Iranian officials, the talks were carried out indirectly, with Omani officials conveying messages between the two camps.

During the indirect talks, American officials also raised concerns over the expansion of Iran’s nuclear program.

The first round of talks was held in January, and the second round is scheduled for February. However, the second round never materialized.
