The secret to the intelligence of the octopus has been discovered by biologists from the University of Chicago Marine Biology Laboratory.

Not only octopuses, scientists have actually uncovered the secrets of intelligence that cephalopod species have, including squid.

They uncovered the secret by checking the DNA gene of the cephalopod species.

Secrets of Octopus Intelligence Revealed

A biologist at the University of Chicago Marine Biology Laboratory named Caroline Albertin managed to discover the secret that makes the cephalopod species have such good intelligence.

Cephalopod species itself consists of marine animals octopus and squid. It has been a long time since the octopus has been known to be one of the smartest marine animals.

After doing some research, Albertin managed to uncover the secret behind the intelligence of Cephalopods. The secret is the ability of octopuses and cephalopods to develop the most complex nervous systems. One of them by checking the DNA gene.

Octopuses, squid and cuttlefish have random genomes that can help them develop the most complex nerves of all invertebrates.

The genes of these cephalopod animals in the new genetic sequence have been arranged and mixed in a somewhat odd sequence.

This provides a new hypothesis regarding the regulation of genes that can create new expression patterns.

“This raises the hypothesis that the regulation of new genes could create new expression patterns. This means that genes in new places will be useful in new ways too,” said Albertin from the Live Science page.

The active gene process will be able to produce several types of work in the body.

Has Experienced Genome Randomization

This DNA mixing and matching has given rise to a new evolution. In turn, this could also explain the extraordinary abilities of octopuses and squid, such as arms with brains and advanced vision.

Previously, scientists had long suspected that these strange things were happening in the cephalopod genome. It was 2015 when Albertin and his colleagues sequenced the first genome of an octopus to find out what the secrets of octopus intelligence were like.

They originally hoped to see what a unique pattern of genetic evolution similar to that of many other vertebrates or duplication would look like.

Indeed, throughout the history of life on Earth, all vertebrates with jaws copied their genomes up to two times.

This means that mammals, birds, amphibians, fish and sharks collect as many as four copies of the original genome. Some of the genes they copied have been lost, but many have been evolutionarily borrowed to take on new roles.

The results of the research on the octopus genome were different. The cephalopod genome has apparently been scrambled. Albertin and team found 505 blocks of three or more genes that occur together in squid and octopuses.

Uniquely, these genes cannot be found in other animals. There is no clarity on how Cephalopods do this.

However, this fact provides an interesting new perspective on how new features emerge in evolution and unlocks the secrets of the intelligence of octopuses and their friends. (R10/HR-Online)
