Secret change in WhatsApp: This is what’s new when you look at a photo

WhatsApp is secretly making a change to its messenger. It affects the viewing of photos in full screen. You now have two options available.

At the end of July, WhatsApp released an update for its Android app on Google Play. Under “New function” only the adjustment of the standard background is done here. But apparently the messenger has secretly made further changes. This becomes obvious when you tap a photo in the chat to view it in full screen.

WhatsApp now displays two new buttons. In the bottom left corner you will see an emoji, in the right an arrow with the word “Reply”. What is this all about? The two new buttons are so-called shortcuts that are intended to quickly take you to features you already know.

Shortcuts let you react directly to photos

You can use the arrow to quote the image and write a response in the chat. The emoji button takes you to a menu where you can select an emoji as a reaction to the image. Previously, you had to leave the full-screen display first to react to an image. This is no longer necessary.

It has been known since May that WhatsApp is working on a revision of the full-screen display of photos. At that time, a revised view first appeared in a beta version of the messenger.

However, it looked completely different to the version that has now been introduced. Next to the emoji button there was a text field in which you could type your answer. This has now given way to the second button. The reason for this is unclear. We suspect that the text field took up too much space for the developers and covered up too much of the photo.

However, since WhatsApp has not yet officially communicated this change, it is possible that this is only an extended test and that changes will be made to the function in the next few days.

WhatsApp will not only introduce new shortcuts in the full-screen display of photos, but also in chats. In the future, you will be able to like a message by double-tapping it.
