Shooting took place outside Synagogue, East Jerusalem on Friday by a suspected terrorist gunman. The perpetrator was overpowered by the police and died on the spot.
Reported AFP Saturday (28/1/2023), the local police in a statement said the incident occurred on Friday (27/1) at 8:15 pm local time. The perpetrators who were called terrorists suddenly opened fire on a number of people in the area.
“Earlier this evening at around 8:30 pm (1830 GMT), a terrorist arrived at a synagogue on Neve Yaakov boulevard in Jerusalem and started shooting a number of people in the area,” a police statement said.
Police then arrived at the scene quickly. The police exchanged fire with the perpetrator until finally the perpetrator was overpowered and died on the spot.
“Police forces quickly arrived on the scene, engaged the terrorist and opened fire on him.” he said.
“At the end of the shootout and chase between the police and the terrorists, the terrorist was neutralized and then pronounced dead,” he continued.
Police have identified the gunman as a 21-year-old east Jerusalem resident.
A total of 7 people died in the terrorist shooting.
The Magen David Adom emergency response service reported a total of 10 gunshot victims, including a 70-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy.
Speaking to media at the scene, Israeli police commissioner Kobi Shabtai called it “one of the worst attacks we have encountered in recent years.”
