Intense campaigns should get the vaccination coverage of the (oldest) inhabitants of Brussels high.

The vaccination rate among the oldest age categories in Brussels is around seventy percent. This means that the region achieves the national target, but there is a difference with Flanders. There, more than nine out of ten people in the group over 75 years of age have been vaccinated. Due to the lower response to invitations for vaccinations, Brussels had to descend the age pyramid fairly quickly in order to be able to use the delivered doses quickly. Today anyone over the age of 51 can make an appointment spontaneously.
But there is a kind of ‘second round’ going on for the oldest age groups. They receive a telephone call from municipalities and health insurance funds to be vaccinated anyway. The call for a vaccination is also being strengthened through pharmacists, general practitioners and local associations, among others.
“We keep trying, even with those who received the invitation a while ago,” says Inge Neven of the Brussels health inspectorate. ‘It is important that the vaccination coverage for the risk groups is as high as possible, also because there is a chance that young people will want to be vaccinated less.’
