Second time capsule found under controversial statue of General Lee | Abroad

In the US state of Virginia, a second time capsule has been found in the pedestal, which until recently held a bronze statue of General Robert E. Lee. Last week, construction workers who are removing the pedestal already found a box containing, among other things, an almanac from 1875.

The new find is a copper box, which researchers believe is the time capsule left in the pedestal, according to an 1887 newspaper article. It would contain bullets, cards and coins from the Confederacy. It would also contain a rare photo of the assassinated President Abraham Lincoln lying in his coffin.

The statue of Lee was removed earlier this year because he is a controversial figure in American history. The general fought during the American Civil War (1861-1865) on the side of the Confederacy, the southern states that aspired to independence and preserve slavery.

The statue of Lee sparked protests last year after black George Floyd was killed by a white police officer, who was eventually found guilty of murder. Ten days after Floyd’s death, in order to avoid the image worship of this pro-slavery historical figure, it was decided to remove it.

The time capsule will be opened on Tuesday, at 7 p.m. (Dutch time).
