The police have arrested a second suspect in the investigation into the incidents surrounding the Sunneklaas festival on Ameland. It concerns a 22-year-old resident of the island.
A 31-year-old Amelander was previously arrested. Both men have now been released, but remain suspects.
A camera crew from PowNed was attacked by Amelanders on December 5 when the broadcaster wanted to report on the Sunneklaas celebration, a local version of Sinterklaas. Only residents of Ameland are welcome at the party. The islanders always try to remain secretive about the party.
According to the Amelanders, PowNed was told that the camera crew was not welcome. When the journalists did arrive, they were chased by a group of between twenty and thirty islanders. Footage showed the journalists’ car being rammed.
The broadcaster has filed several reports following the incident on Ameland. The Amelanders also say that they have filed a report.
Outgoing Minister of Justice Dilan Yesilgöz reacted strongly to the events on Ameland. “The basics are: you keep your paws out of the press,” Yesilgöz said. “And then it is up to us – politicians, the police and the Public Prosecution Service – to ensure that action is taken if this is not the case. I talk about this passionately because it is one of the foundations of our constitutional state.”
