The police have arrested a second suspect for the assault on FVD leader Thierry Baudet on Monday. It concerns an underage boy. The first person arrested is also a minor. He must be held in custody for an additional fourteen days.
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) has not released anything about the identity of the arrested boy. Nothing has yet been said about his role in the attack. The suspect was arrested on Tuesday.
Baudet was hit on the head with a beer bottle in a Groningen cafe on Monday. Shortly after the attack, the police arrested the first suspect, a fifteen-year-old boy. The examining magistrate decided on Thursday that the boy must remain in custody for an additional fourteen days.
The Public Prosecution Service suspects both boys of assaulting a politician, which has had a significant social impact. Due to their age, the judiciary is reluctant to provide information about the suspects.
After the attack, Baudet was taken to hospital. At a press conference a day later, the FVD leader said that he was lucky, because the physical damage was not too bad considering the circumstances.
Baudet was also attacked at the end of October. In the Belgian city of Ghent, a man hit the politician with an umbrella. Due to security conditions, the FVD party meeting on election night was canceled on Wednesday.
