Player number 456 is back: Netflix has released the first short teaser for the second season of its hit series “Squid Game”.

The second season of the Netflix mega hit “Squid Game” finally starts on December 26th. The streaming service has now released the first teaser for the sequel releasedThe short clip does not provide any details about the content. Fans see a number of players in the deadly game in the famous green tracksuits from season one. They wear the already familiar three-digit numbers on their backs. Their faces cannot be recognized.

One number, however, should be familiar to fans of the series: 456. In the first season, the number was worn by Gi-hun, hero and winner of the perverted competition in season one. The man with the number 456 turns around in the teaser. It is actually Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, 51.

So Gi-hun will be back in the next “Squid Game” season. This was to be expected, but it was not a given. In the first moving images that Netflix released in February 2024, Gi-hun was only seen in civilian clothes.

In a videowhich introduced the new releases of the year, also included a short excerpt from “Squid Game 2”. In it, Gi-hun is on the phone at the airport. “You will regret the decision you made,” comes the voice from the receiver. But player number 456 answers firmly: “I will find you, no matter what it costs.” This scene follows directly on from the end of the first season. In it, Gi-hun decides not to fly to the USA. Instead, he stays in Korea.

According to Netflix, the second season of “Squid Game” takes place three years after the events of the first season. “Gi-hun once again delves into the mysterious survival game and begins another game of life and death with new participants fighting for the prize of 45.6 billion won,” the announcement says.

The short clip also contains news about the already planned third season. Season three will be the conclusion of the series, and “Squid Game” fans will not have to wait another three years for the final episodes. Season three is set to be released next year.

The “Squid Game” success story

In part one of the South Korean production, hundreds of heavily indebted people were invited to a series of competitions based on Korean children’s games. The only winner received exorbitantly high prize money, and everyone else faced death. For Netflix, “Squid Game” was one of the most successful formats ever shown, with 142 million streaming views in the first few weeks after it was broadcast in 2021. The series also marked the international breakthrough for some of its stars – lead actor Lee Jung-jae, for example, can now be seen in the “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte”.
