“Currently, there are still about 800,000 Belgians who received their first injection of the AstraZeneca vaccine, when there were still 12 weeks between the two injections. On May 12, the Ministers of Health decided to shorten this period to 8 weeks, but the 12 weeks continued to apply to everyone who had previously been vaccinated with or invited to AZ.
Thanks to the newly delivered vaccines, they too can now get their second shot earlier. This mainly concerns people over 65 and patients at risk. “They can now be optimally protected up to 4 weeks earlier, which is crucial with the advancing Delta variant. After two doses of the AZ vaccine, the protection against severe Covid-19 is more than 90 percent. They are not obliged to bring forward the second dose, they can also simply keep their old date.”
How to advance?
In Flanders, most vaccination centers will probably already have free moments available next week for appointments for an early second dose. To limit the overload on the helpdesks of the vaccination centers, the task force asks that people reschedule their appointment for a second dose as much as possible.
“You can check from Thursday whether times are available next week or later, via the confirmation email of your appointment for the second dose after twelve weeks,” the task force reports. “If you don’t manage to find a free moment right away, try again a few days later,” it sounds.
People who live in Brussels and are eligible for an advance by more than a week have already received a text message. They can reschedule their second appointment by calling the call center on 02-214.19.19.
