Second season of anchovy fishing is at 80% of the assigned quota | Economy

“The average daily incidence of juveniles, to date, has been decreasing as expected,” says the Ministry of Production.

The Ministry of Production (Produce) indicated that, according to the report of the Institute of the Sea of Peru (Imarpe), until January 26, a total of 1 million 819,872 tons of anchovy had been landed in the second fishing season of this species, which represents 79.7 % of the maximum total allowable catch limit (LMTCP) established.

“The average daily incidence of juveniles, to date, has been decreasing as expected due to compliance with the fishing quota of the vessels and also to the strengthening of the implementation of management measures aimed at their protection, such as immediate closures from various areas due to a high incidence of juveniles,” reported Imarpe.

In addition, the anchovy reproductive condition of the north-central stock, by monitoring its reproductive indicators, suggests that the resource is preparing its summer reproductive activity and that this will continue to intensify from the first week of February, to give way to the spawning (expulsion of oocytes and sperm into the sea for fertilization).

For their part, industrial fishermen point out that the quota for this season of 2.2 million was excessive and that, of what has been caught to date, 50% is juvenile, for which reason they continue to demand the closure of the current season as the at risk the sustainability of the resource.
