Second Russia-Ukraine Dialogue Agrees on 1 of 3 Main Issues

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The second round dialog between Russia and Ukraine completed after about three hours on Thursday (3/3).

Representatives of Ukraine regretted that the negotiations that took place on the Belarus-Polish border did not meet their expectations.

Of the three issues that were the main agenda of the talks, only one was successfully agreed by both parties.

“The second round of negotiations is over. Unfortunately, the results that Ukraine wants have not been achieved. There is only one solution (achievable) to (agree) on setting up a humanitarian corridor,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak, head of the delegation, tweeted.

For the second time, Russian-Ukrainian talks since the Moscow invasion have yielded no breakthrough on a ceasefire agreement to end the bloodshed.

Before starting the meeting at around 17.00 Kiev time, Podolyak explained that there were three main issues to be discussed with the Russian delegation.

First, the issue of an immediate ceasefire. Second, regarding the ceasefire agreement. And lastly, the issue of establishing a humanitarian route to evacuate civilians from the Ukrainian territory that was destroyed by the Russians.

In his tweet on Twitter, Podolyak also uploaded a photo showing four Ukrainian delegates facing four Russian delegates in a room.

The Ukrainian delegation was seen dressed casually, while the four Russian representatives wore formal suits. There were also Ukrainian and Russian flags on their desks.

The second round of dialogue was held after the two delegations failed to agree on a ceasefire in their first talks since the Russian invasion took place on Monday (28/2).

The negotiations between the two countries occurred when Ukraine continued to be under pressure following the increasingly frenzied Russian military onslaught on the eighth day of the invasion as of Thursday (3/3).

Russia has again attacked a number of Ukrainian cities, especially in the south of the former Soviet Union. President Vladimir Putin even vowed to continue the invasion of Ukraine without compromise.

Russia has so far also taken control of Kherson as of today. Kherson is one of the important cities in Ukraine which plays a strategic role. This city is at the entrance of the Black Sea with a population of nearly 300 thousand inhabitants.

Russian troops are also increasingly besieging Mariupol in southern Ukraine. Ukrainian military officers said Mariupol’s condition had become increasingly critical due to the Russian attack and assisted by separatist troops from Donetsk since Wednesday (2/3).
