The first generation of twin-doors Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ lasted almost nine years on the assembly line – their production was discontinued. in summer… Although both companies in advance reported about working together on new models, so that their debut was only a matter of time. This time, the first was the Subaru BRZ coupe. And it seems that the second generation is in fact only the result of a deep modernization of the old car.
The image remains the same: the BRZ profile is just as easily recognizable thanks to the characteristic shape of the side glazing. But the design is still redesigned: the radiator grille is now wider, the lighting technology is new (the taillights have a narrow crosspiece), and the area for the license plate, which was previously located on the trunk lid, has now been moved to the bumper. The updated optics gained LED sections, and at the back the BRZ even retained a separate unit with reversing lights and foglights.
In length, the coupe has added 30 mm (up to 4264 mm), although the distance between the axles has increased by only 5 mm and is now equal to 2575 mm. The width of the car has not changed (1775 mm), and the height has decreased by 10 mm (1311 mm). The coupe has become heavier: the basic version in curb condition now pulls 1277 kg versus 1220 kg for the first generation model.
The salon has retained the simple architecture familiar from the first generation model. And the multifunction steering wheel with red stitching is completely the same. However, the driver now has virtual devices instead of the previous analog ones, and in the center of the front panel there is a new media system with an eight-inch touch screen and support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay interfaces.
Contrary to rumors, the long-awaited two-door turbo engine has not yet received it, however, the previous two-liter aspirated engine is still dismissed. It was replaced by a 2.4 boxer naturally aspirated engine with combined injection, which produces 231 hp. and 249 Nm. The choice, as before, is a six-speed “mechanics” and a classic “automatic”. The limited slip differential is included in the list of basic equipment.
The chassis retained the McPherson struts at the front and double wishbones at the rear, but the suspension was stiffer. The switchable VSC stabilization system can operate in five modes, and Subaru BRZ has also acquired a set of electronic assistants EyeSight, although on basic cars with “mechanics” it will be available only for a surcharge. However, prices, as well as the dynamic characteristics of the second generation BRZ, will be published closer to the start of sales, which is only scheduled for autumn 2021. Moreover, the main market for the coupe will be the United States, and in Europe it will not appear at all. So there is no need to wait for the new BRZ in Russia.
