So far it is not clear what caused the derailment, but the investigation will focus on the rails where the problem could have been. Apparently the rail was not in the best condition even though an on-site inspection was carried out in November and no anomalies were found.
New York City transit and MTA officials responded. The Office of Emergency Management is helping, as is the NYPD.
“That is very bad, it is dangerous, someone could have been killed there. The train could have fallen,” said Tania Melenciano, a Brooklyn resident.
The United Passengers Organization says that the subway It is in emergency and it is a maintenance problem.
The Brooklyn derailment comes days after a minor collision between trains led to a derailment on the Upper West Side on Thursday, and days of headaches for commuters on the 1/2/3 lines. The NTSB is investigating that Jan. 4 case.
