The Belgian police arrested a second Dutchman on Wednesday on suspicion of involvement in the drowning of a 53-year-old man in Ghent. The suspect, a 23-year-old man from Goes, turned himself in at the police station in Ghent.
Earlier, the police arrested a 25-year-old Goesenaar. He was arrested in Breda. The Belgian Public Prosecution Service asked for the man’s surrender.
Both suspects would have thrown a man into the water in the night from Saturday to Sunday during the Gentse Feesten. CCTV footage shows two men grabbing the victim and throwing it off a bridge. The duo then flees. The Belgian victim, named Hakim, could not swim and drowned.
Hakim’s body was found Sunday morning in the water at Ferdinand Lousbergskaai. The autopsy revealed that he was still alive when he was thrown into the water.
Belgian media previously reported that Hakim was probably accompanied by three Dutch people. They were said to have had fun with him before two of them threw the victim over the railing of the bridge.
