Second dose of vaccine allowed after positive COVID-19 test

The Ministry of Health in Suriname announced on Tuesday that it is offering a second dose of vaccine to people who have had one instead of two doses of vaccine in recent months after a positive COVID-19 test.

Research shows that 1 dose of vaccine within 6 months after a COVID-19 infection offers sufficient protection. As in many countries, it has therefore been advised so far to give 1 dose to people who tested positive for COVID-19 4 weeks to 6 months in advance. This is especially so given the uncertainty about the amount of vaccine doses available to our population.

Scientific research has now shown that an extra dose is important to provide better protection. And now there are also sufficient doses of vaccine for the Surinamese population. That is why an extra dose is also offered to this group in Suriname on the advice of the NITAG (subcommittee of the Technical Advisory Committee on National Immunization Policy COVID-19). Also because a second dose is now necessary to travel to different countries.

The second dose will be of the same vaccine as the first dose. Unless the patient is pregnant. In that case, a dose of Moderna or Pfizer will be given. For the second dose, you can go to the POC, the Zorghotel or a location nearby where the vaccine suitable for you will be administered on that day.

You can check the latter on the weekly calendar, which you can find on the website or facebook page of the Ministry of Health. Pre-registration is not necessary.
