Second dolphin washed up on the Zeeland coast this weekend

Rescuers were alerted to save the animal, but to no avail. The animal soon died on the beach.

Group of dolphins

Yesterday a dolphin also washed ashore. Then it was a young male on the beach of Zierikzee. Photos show that the animal was injured. This is probably due to peck wounds from birds and scratches from the shells on the beach.

The two dolphins found probably belong to a small group of dolphins that were seen in the Oosterscheldekering on Friday.

“A live dolphin stranded is always an animal in need and the condition of an animal on the beach can deteriorate rapidly,” reports SOS Dolphin Foundation on their facebook page.

Don’t push back into the sea

They call on not just pushing the animal back into the sea when finding a stranded dolphin, but calling the emergency number first. “Keep the blowhole free of sand and water and provide rest. Cool the animal with water and wet cloths if present.”

Dolphins generally live in warmer waters. The cause of the stranding of both animals will be investigated. The dolphins are transferred to Utrecht University.
