TSV 1860 Munich can continue its role as a second division scare in the DFB Cup against Karlsruher SC. “I think this is a good lot,” said captain Sascha Mölders on Sunday evening after the draw for the round of 16 games on ARD.
The “Löwen” are the last remaining Bavarian club in the traditional cup competition, as goal scorer Mölders explicitly pointed out. He expects “a game at eye level” on January 18 or 19, 2022 in the Grünwalder Stadium. Even if Mölders declared his team as an outsider as a third division club, he sees “definitely good chances” for the advance into the quarter-finals.
In the first two rounds of the cup, coach Michael Köllner’s team had already prevailed against the second division clubs SV Darmstadt 98 and FC Schalke 04.
Defending champion Borussia Dortmund has to play away with the current second division leaders FC St. Pauli. Another attractive round of 16 is the Berlin local derby between Hertha BSC and 1. FC Union. Borussia Mönchengladbach, who surprisingly defeated record cup winners FC Bayern Munich 5-0 in the second round, will be visiting the second division Hannover 96.
