LONDON (AP) – The Championship tournament, as the second division of English football is called, on Monday secured more than $ 160 million in loans that will allow its clubs to meet their fiscal responsibilities despite declining income from the coronavirus pandemic.
There were no spectators at games for the equivalent of an entire season since the outbreak, and clubs lost about $ 200 million in tickets and other revenue from game days.
“This support will be vital so that the clubs can continue to reconsider their financial situation,” said Rick Perry, president of the English Football League, which manages the three categories below the Premier League. “This will help them overcome the pandemic and plan with greater certainty for the 2021/22 season, in which we hope that spectators can return to the stadiums.”
The Premier League contributed 20 million so that the LIF could get its loan.
The Premier had already provided almost $ 70 million in financial aid so that third and fourth division clubs could survive the pandemic.
