Second cup round drawn: Our storks meet 1. FC Köln

The second round of the DFB Cup was drawn today, Sunday. The result was that KSV Holstein will play away against second division team 1. FC Köln.

With the last draw of the day, it was clear: Holstein Kiel has to go to Cologne in the second round of the DFB Cup. The match against FC will then be about a place in the round of 16. Our storks will play the match in the second round of the cup on either October 29 or 30, 2024.

Carsten Wehlmann, sports director at KSV Holstein, said of the draw on Sunday: “We are looking forward to an atmospheric game in Cologne, in front of a great crowd. Of course it will be a challenge and we know how tough the opponent is. But we want to move into the next round – that is our goal and we will do everything we can to achieve that.”

Head coach Marcel Rapp was also pleased with the result of the draw: “A cool draw! We will again have a great atmosphere, like in the first round in Aachen, and that’s why we’re looking forward to playing there in Cologne. But we also know that this won’t be a game against a normal second division team. Cologne have a very good team, peppered with a number of experienced and well-known players who can make the difference. That’s why we’re looking forward to the task. Nevertheless, we know our strengths and are confident enough to say that we want to be in the pot again in the next draw.”

Our storks will face 1. FC Cologne, currently sixth in the second Bundesliga. After four games, Cologne coach Gerhard Struber’s team has seven points. Most recently, they won 3-1 away at FC Schalke 04. In the first round of the cup, FC beat SV Sandhausen 3-2 after extra time. Our storks, meanwhile, also reached the second round with a 3-2 win. Lasse Rosenboom was the match winner away at Alemannia Aachen, scoring two goals.

Rich history between Kiel and Cologne

There have been six competitive matches between our storks and the Geißbock eleven so far. And all of these encounters are among the absolute highlights of the club’s history. In 1953, as runners-up in the first-class Oberliga Nord, we met Cologne twice in the final round of the German championship (2:2/2:3). 28,000 fans flocked to Holsteinplatz for the home game against the then West runners-up. In the 2018/19 season, the two encounters in the 2nd Bundesliga with the three-time German champions were two of the season’s highlights for our club (1:1/0:4) and in 2021 the two relegation matches were also Holstein against Cologne (1:0/1:5). So Cologne left the pitch as winners three times, twice it was a draw and once our KSV won. The cup match in Cologne will be the seventh meeting between the two clubs in competitive matches.

In 1953, Holstein and Cologne played for the German championship.
