United States Institutes for Disease Control and Prevention (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/CDC) issued a health alert to doctors, state health departments, and the public. The alert informs about a case of bird flu in a person who had contact with a dairy cow suspected of being infected with the virus. The Texas livestock worker was reportedly infected on April 1, making him the second case of the H5N1 type of bird flu virus, commonly known as avian flu, identified on someone in the US.
This case follows cases that occurred in 2022 in Colorado, and occurred when the virus spread to new mammals, including dairy cattle for the first time.
To prevent infection with the virus, CDC recommends the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), testing, antiviral treatment, patient investigation and monitoring of people exposed to sick or dead animals, wild and domestic animals and livestock that may be infected with the virus.
Earlier this week, the CDC stated that these infections do not change its assessment of the risk of H5N1 avian influenza to the general public in the US, which is considered low. The state health department reported that the only symptom experienced by patients in Texas was eye inflammation. [ah/ft]
