The record man, the player who has defended the most jerseys, the one who took penalties Panenka style: in these and more ways you can remember Sebastian Loco Abreu the player who conquered more hobbies than any other.

The former striker was born in 1976 in Uruguay. Although his training was in the leagues of his country, his arrival in Mexico was a turning point in his career; throughout his career played for 7 Liga MX clubs (tecos, Blue Cross, AmericaDorados, Monterrey, San Luis and Tigres), competition with the highest number of clubs defended by Abreu.

Success was not a trait that characterized him during his time in Mexican soccer; despite the fact that he wore so many shirts and with highly competitive teams, he could never lift a champion trophy in Aztec lands.

Although he could never be proclaimed monarch in Mexico, he did demonstrate his goalscoring qualities. He was scoring champion 4 times (2000 with Tecos, 2002 with Cruz Azul and 2005 and 2006 with Dorados de Sinaloa), one more than Andre Pierre Gignacwho has achieved it only three times.

Abreu is proof that colors are not synonymous with irrational enmities. He was able to wear the shirt of Cruz Azul and América, and that of Tigres and Monterrey without any inconvenience; in fact, he earned love in every corner: Crazy he was not a mercenary, he was a ball nomad.

The Loco Abreu became important in other ways, for example with a Guinness record: During his 26 years as a professional footballer, he played for 31 teams. And to date, He is the Uruguayan player with the most goals in the history of Liga MX (116), a fact that undoubtedly captivated the Mexican fans.

In addition, he built a solid career in the Uruguay National Team: he scored 26 goals; he participated in the 2002 and 2010 World Cups (the edition of the legendary penalty against Ghana in the quarterfinals); and he played 3 Copa América, 1997, 2007 and 2011, in the last one he was proclaimed champion.

He arrived at the Guadalajara team in 1999, coming from the Gremio in Brazil and quickly adapted to Liga MX. In fact, in this club he showed why they called him the Loco. counted Juan Carlos Leanoson of the club owner, that on some occasion convinced the campus to follow the fashion of walking shavedand one of his “victims” was Adolfo Bautista.

With Tecos he got his first scoring championship in Summer 2000 and he established himself as one of the institution’s top scorers: he scored a total of 34 goals in his two stages, 2000 y 2004. He went to Uruguay in 2001, but a year later he would return to national territory.

After a brilliant time at Los Tecolotes, Abreu made the leap to one of the so-called “greats”. There he caused a furor in the cement fans, because his annotations allowed him to dream of a championship: in 43 games he scored 37 goalsto ensure —even Jonathan Rodríguez— as the institution’s top Uruguayan network breaker.

However, the illusion that the Loco take Cruz Azul to a championship was broken due to issues outside the field. Abreu left in 2003 in a surprising way, because he had performed well as killerso much so that he won the title of top scorer from José Saturnino Cardozo in the Summer of 2002.

Years later he stated that his departure from the club it had been due to problems with the directiveafter a defeat in the Copa Libertadores that year.

“The president made the decision to want to modify the salaries of the entire squad unilaterally… What one tried to do at that time was defend the rights of the soccer player. For that very fact They labeled me as a cricket and I had to leave the club when I was a top scorer for the Libertadores“, said the Uruguayan.

This is perhaps one of Sebastián Abreu’s most discreet moments in Mexican soccer. He came with a big sign to the Eagles de Leo Beenhakker, pero he only scored 3 goals in 16 official matches.

In addition, the relationship with the coach was not the best. He assured that had to go to the bench due to differences in game tactics.

The technician was a special personality. He was special in his treatment and so was I, and I wanted to impose my characteristics, since he came with a good performance and goals, but an absurd discussion was the trigger. He asked me to hit the near post and I had scored 80 goals hitting the far post. He sent me to the bank like a wretch and just in the classic, number 9 was injured and I had to play and I scored a goal from the far post”, he assured for Fox Sports.

He went from the greats to a team that was fighting not to descend, but even with that condition he managed to shine. With the Sinaloa squad he met Pep Guardiola and got the scoring championship twice in the Apertura 2005 and Clausura 2006.

His 22 goals in 34 games could not make Dorados fight in the final phase, or even be saved from losing the category, so he decided to change clubs rather than play in the promotion league.

He arrived in Nuevo León for the 2006 Apertura, a player of his stature could not afford to be in the promotion league, and it was the Rayados who decided to use his services.

The tournament progressed, and although he was not a key player in the Michael Herrera, he scored 8 times, and managed to sneak into the leaguehis championship aspiration was more alive than ever, but Toluca ended it by eliminating him and The gang in the quarterfinals.

After his departure, the Louse He recognized that it had been a mistake to have let him go from the campus. “These are circumstances, maybe I was wrong with Abreu because he didn’t fit into my system but he was a committed guy, a guy who told me I understand that I don’t fit in but I’m going to do everything possible to do what you ask of me”, Herrera said a few years ago.

After a semester in Monterrey and with an important tour in Mexico, Abreu would try his luck with San Luis, a club that was not used to being on important stages, but that only two tournaments ago he had fought the final against Pachuca.

Now, with a new challenge, the Uruguayan striker supported the Potosi cause with five goals in the regular phase. This enabled a ticket to playoff to play league, the pass would be played against Santos; San Luis took the first leg 1-0, but in the second leg the Laguneros won 2-0 and eliminated the Loco and yours.

The 2007 Apertura was the last time that Sebastián Abreu wore a Liga MX shirt, his performance had dropped but he was still an important bet to score goals.

With Tigres he gave 7 blows in 14 commitments but he stayed far from the league. However, even in a moment of “decline” he reached another record: being the first foreign player to score in a Clásico Regio with both institutions.

That was Sebastian’s step crazy abreu for Aztec football, he did not win titles, but he did leave an important mark.
