Austria’s former chancellor Sebastian Kurz was found guilty of perjury by a court in Vienna on Friday.
Kurz, who resigned as chancellor in October 2021, was given a suspended eight-month prison sentence.
According to Reuters, Judge Mihael Radastic announced the sentence before beginning a detailed reading of the verdict.
It is recalled that the former chancellor was accused of knowingly testifying falsely to a parliamentary investigative committee in June 2020.
In particular, he lied to the parliamentary committee investigating whether he had interfered in the appointment of his own man, Thomas Schmidt, as head of a public holding company.
The perjury
Kurtz, 36, is accused of knowingly giving false testimony to a parliamentary investigative committee in June 2020.
Sebastian Kurz was then asked whether he had promoted the appointment of his trusted associate Thomas Schmidt as head of the powerful state holding company ÖBAG and whether he had tried to shape the composition of the company’s supervisory board.
The former chancellor replied in the negative, however, according to the prosecutor’s office, it emerged from telephone conversations and text messages that the two men had communicated about the specific position.
