Sebastian Hutecek: How HSG Konstanz Secured a Point in a Thrilling Game and Overcame a Three-Goal Deficit

Sebastian, without eight players, a point was secured in the top game in Oppenweiler. Where did this energy come from in the final phase after a three-goal deficit?

It was a brutally heated and difficult game – as expected. I have to give the team huge respect. We weren’t quite there in the first ten minutes of the second half. Not in terms of concentration, but rather in terms of strength, getting back into our mode. However, we can’t give up the three-goal lead so quickly and let it fall from plus three to minus three. But the fact that we leave our hearts on the field and never give up speaks for us.

How difficult is the current phase given the many cancellations and the top games in foreign halls such as in Fürstenfeldbruck and Oppenweiler?

Of course that’s not easy. Nevertheless, we proved that we still have good handball players and that the score will be settled at the final whistle. Faith is always there with us. In defense we got the ball under pressure and played it smart up front. Everyone knows how important they are for the team, everyone fits in really well.

About the personSebastian Hutecek has been the only available middle man for the third division handball team HSG Konstanz in recent weeks. The 25-year-old Austrian leads the young team with full commitment. Born in Horn, the former youth and junior national player from Bärnbach/Köflach came to Lake Constance in the summer of 2022. His brother Lukas plays in the German Bundesliga for TBV Lemgo and is also active for the Austrian national team. (yeah)

In addition, there was an enormous amount of positive energy from the stands lined with over 100 HSG fans who had traveled with us. Did that release additional powers?

When you walk into the hall and see so many yellow and blue jerseys, it gives you a boost of energy. We are incredibly grateful to have such a backdrop behind us and to always be able to rely on our fans. We as a team want to give something back to the fans all the more.

Head coach Jörg Lützelberger said the team surprises him week after week and has something about them that makes them difficult to beat. What is it?

We are a homogeneous, cool group that gets along well. Everyone gives 100 percent of their best. Of course there are days when you are tired or when everything hurts after a game like in Oppenweiler. Our goal does not change. It doesn’t matter whether we are 10 or 18 in training. Our coaching team prepares us well for every opponent. What we have achieved together with a small squad in the last four weeks makes me proud. The eleven or twelve players who were available worked like pigs and never gave up. Maybe our youthful enthusiasm will help us to subordinate ourselves to team success and to trust each other. That’s why I like to go on the boards.

You yourself are currently taking on a lot of responsibility and moving forward.

Due to the failures, it takes some time until new constellations are found and established again. Now the blind trust is back. This solidarity is nice to experience. I really hope that Christos (Erifopoulos, editor’s note) and all the other injured people will be back soon. I’ve found my way into the new role well and my self-confidence is increasing from game to game. I like to take on an important role and get involved wherever the team needs me. That’s why I work hard every day and always give 100 percent on the field.

On Saturday, 8 p.m., Pforzheim comes to the Schänzle. What do you expect?

That we prepare well and work well again – and with this foundation we can deliver a good performance and our best game again. We want to get the next two points and make Schänzle hell shake. Pforzheim should not be underestimated. What counts for us is to perform again with high intensity, patience and power.

You said you learned to appreciate the HSG and Konstanz in your first year here at Lake Constance. What do you mean by that exactly?

This team gives me a lot of mental strength. I just have a lot of fun here. There are many very good people in the coaching team, in the team and in our family environment. I really enjoy working with them and our great fans.
