SEB Bank Board Member Shares Heart-Wrenching Story of Refugee Crisis in Southern Italy

14:04, 21 January 2024

I have a personal story – I have the honor of working in the International Council of SOS Children’s Villages, it covers all 130 countries. The Italian colleagues actually forced them to go to Southern Italy, the very, very bottom, where the refugee boats arrive and where the refugee camps are. This is how Kārlis Danēvičs, SEB banka’s board member and risk director, begins his commentary on illegal immigration in the TV24 program “Press Club”.

“I was there two months ago. It changed the outlook on life.. – when you see washed up children’s shoes washed up on the beach after the sinking of the refugee boats, when you see what it looks like and what Italians are trying to cope with, when you see the hopelessness..” so Danevičs describes what he saw on the spot.

He also tells a story from his personal experience, where, walking down the street with the police, illegal immigrants still dare to approach and offer to buy drugs, then “you see the real poverty and hopelessness, then you realize that in that part of Europe there is a huge empathy for for our problems we cannot get because we have no empathy and understanding for their problems.”

He emphasizes that he is not a supporter of uncontrolled migration, but this is a real problem. “They are not going away. Thinking that there is no need to show solidarity with this, it can directly contribute to the disintegration of Europe. We have no empathy for them, they will have no empathy for us in our difficult hour.”
