RENTON, Washington. – Renton police say K’Shawn Konscience Jimerson, 19, called 911 on Friday and told the operator he had stabbed someone and would be standing “outside with a knife.”
When officers arrived, they found Michael Gray, 65, inside Jimerson’s apartment with stab wounds to his side and back.
He died from his injuries.
Detectives say surveillance video clearly shows Jimerson chasing Gray from behind and hitting him in the back of the head with a large wooden club, then hitting him twice more in the head after he fell to the ground. Gray turned to fight Jimerson, who ran out and grabbed a knife, before disappearing into the apartment.
Witnesses say they heard an argument and then saw Jimerson holding a large butcher knife and covered in blood.
Officers recovered the knife in a sink filled with detergent.
A witness saw Gray bleeding to death and yelled at Jimerson to call 911 before he died. In the 911 call, Jimerson claimed self-defense.
Detectives say the video clearly shows this was not a case of self-defense. Tomorrow they will present additional information to prosecutors.
Gray had been hired by Jimerson’s grandmother to do maintenance work. He had spent a day and a half cleaning the walls inside the apartment. She is said to be devastated by the murder.
Gray lived right across the street from the Jimerson family. He was a military veteran. His roommates say he hated having his photo taken, so we don’t have one to show you right now.
A day after his arrest, Judge Michele Gehlsen released Jimerson on $50,000 bail without electronic monitoring of his home.
At the time, surveillance video of the attack had not been included as evidence, so she would not have known about it. In Washington state, judges are prohibited from conducting interviews or speaking publicly about decisions made in active cases.
Jimerson recently returned to Washington from Texas, where his mother lives.
There is nothing to prevent it from disappearing.
Prosecutors plan to rush to file a murder charge tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
A higher bond must be attached along with a new court order and arraignment date.
