For the second year in a row, the Covid-19 epidemic has thwarted the plans of the Stade de Reims Rugby. Engaged in the Honor championship, the Rémois, who have played only four games (as many defeats), will not resume their season.
It was predictable, it is now official. The French Rugby Federation (FFR) announced, on February 26, the amateur competitions stopped for the 2020-2021 season, with freeze on climbs and descents. ” We expected, it’s not a big surprise », Concedes Nicolas Hivet, president of Stade de Reims Rugby. At the end of October, the amateur championships including that of the Marnais (Honor) had been interrupted. In December, the clubs were allowed to resume training, on condition of respecting a strict health protocol (stage 3).
Since then, the sessions have continued, always without physical contact to respect barrier gestures. ” With the problem of the curfew, the training sessions are on weekends. We do physical preparation and play with the ball. It allows you to do an activity, to keep a social link », Underlines the man at the head of the Marnais club. ” We hope to soon be able to move to stage 4, which would allow oppositions to be made, still without contact but at least we could make touchdowns ».
For now, these constraints do not seem to discourage the young rugby players of the department, loyal to their club. ” Compared to last season, we have the same number of licensees even if it is a little more difficult at the adult level. There are some players that we no longer see on the pitch but we still have contact with them », Explains Nicolas Hivet. While waiting to be able to find all his players on the lawn, President Rémois is actively preparing for next season.
“We are calmly considering the continuation of our activities”
Regarding the future of the club, Nicolas Hivet does not seem worried, both on the financial and sporting aspect. ” Our finances are healthy, we are calmly considering the continuation of our activities without health constraints “. On the field side, the club has not abandoned its project for a women’s XV team (rugby 10 for the moment), necessarily slowed down due to the virus. The city being endowed with a great student potential, the Stade de Reims Rugby hoped to recruit new players to come and enrich its workforce.
This idea was ” swept away for this season by the health crisis but if it is possible, we will do it next season », Affirms the Marnais. At the level of the rugby school, the club ” will continue its development projects for the youngest “. As soon as the health situation allows, actions with the city of Reims will be put in place to promote rugby in schools. The club is also working on the programming of a stage of the Beach Rugby Tour at the Parc de Champagne in partnership with the Ligue du Grand Est.
