With a large program of free activities, the Litoral Cinema Festival (FECIL 2021), organized by the San Antonio Cultural Center with the support of the Audiovisual Development Fund, will be held for the first time in virtual format between May 18 and 22, targeting to the visibility and integration of vulnerable groups in Chilean society.

FECIL 2021 “Cinema for Integration” seeks to establish an inclusive space that covers a need expressed by the community: in the city and in the province of San Antonio there is no formal movie theater. However, the work of the San Antonio Cultural Center has allowed the public to access a unique offer of cinema for the area. Without going any further, between 2018 and the summer of 2020, more than 36,000 people attended face-to-face activities related to the audiovisual field.

Within the Festival’s programming, consolidated as a continuity thread of the Cultural Center in the generation of links with the community, a series of premieres, documentaries, talks, workshops and even the possibility of participating in conversations with the directors stand out. actresses and actors of the works on display.

All the selected films “will address different themes that point to the integration of various social groups in our territory that face sociocultural barriers and violations every day,” explains the director of FECIL 2021, Gonzalo Villarroel. The Festival will have five program lines: national premieres, documentaries as a language of integration, documentaries as challenges in the representation of adolescence, workshops, and talks and forums. A relevant point is that both the national premieres and the documentaries -which will be hosted on the VOD platform of film festivals FESTHOME during all the days of FECIL 2021- will have talks with the directors and / or actresses and actors that will explain the creative processes, challenges and motivations to portray social reality through cinematographic language.

One of the novelties will be the free exhibition (50 tickets available) of the film “Blanco en blanco” (2020, Chile-Spain, 100 min.) Before its official premiere in theaters on May 29. This film, directed by Théo Court and starring Alfredo Castro, is set in the early 20th century in a Tierra del Fuego marked by the Selknam genocide, where a photographer goes to immortalize the marriage of a landowner. The online conversation with Théo Court and Alfredo Castro will take place on Tuesday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. through the Facebook of the San Antonio Cultural Center.

It also highlights “The man of the future” (2019, Chile, 96 min.), Directed by Felipe Ríos and starring Antonia Giesen (The pack). This film is about a forcibly retired truck driver who takes one last trip aboard his vehicle to Villa O’Higgins, in Chilean Patagonia. On the way, he will let go of everything that made up his life, turning his last route into a journey of enlightenment that will allow him to live the present as he always wanted: with his daughter Elena. The virtual conversation with Ríos and Giesen will take place on Wednesday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m.

The remaining three exhibitions will be “Perro bomba”, by Juan Cáceres; “Lina de Lima”, by María Paz González; and “Death will come and he will have your eyes”, by José Luis Torres Leiva. The three talks will be held on May 20, 21 and 22, at 7:00 p.m., respectively. In the latter, in addition to the director, the renowned actress Amparo Noguera, the protagonist of the film, will participate.

Documentaries with social commitment

Another programmatic line of the Festival will be the screening of three documentaries released during the last decade as a language of integration, and another three on the challenges of representing adolescence. The first group includes “Today and not tomorrow” (2019, Chile, 78 min.), By Josefina Morandé, which tells the story of the Women for Life movement during the military dictatorship. On Tuesday, May 18, at 4:00 p.m., there will be a discussion with the director of this documentary.

In addition, “Tierra sola” (2017, Chile, 104 min.), By Tiziana Panizza, will be presented about the Easter Island prison, which has no walls or watchtowers, and where fourteen prisoners and fourteen gendarmes who are related or friends. This situation, however, will change with the construction of a modern prison. The discussion with the director will be on Thursday, May 20 at 4:00 p.m.

The program will close “74 m2”, (2013, Chile, 67 min.), By Paola Castillo and Tiziana Panizza, a documentary that tells the experience of two women as part of a project designed by leaders of social architecture, and how they should cope to the lack of resources within a middle class neighborhood that rejects them.

Regarding documentaries on the challenges of the representation of adolescence, “El Vals de los inútiles” (2014, Chile, 80 min.), By Edison Cajas; “If you listen carefully” (2015, Chile, 56 min.), By Nicolás Guzmán; and “Last year” (2018, Chile, 67 min.), by Viviana Corvalán. The talks with the directors will be on May 18, 19 and 20, all at 12.00, respectively.

Cinema to the ear

The Festival also includes talks in which inclusion will be the core theme. On May 21, at 4:00 p.m., there will be an open discussion through the networks of the San Antonio Cultural Center, led by the journalist and film critic, Ernesto Garratt. Entitled “Milestones of inclusive cinema”, the talk will aim to enhance the value of different films in the history of national and international cinema that address the issue of integration. It will be broadcast on the networks of the San Antonio Cultural Center on Friday, May 21 at 4:00 p.m.

On the other hand, a forum called “Does cinema respond to integration?” Will be held, in which Chilean and local film directors will be able to exchange concepts. It is an activity with a maximum call of 30 people who act as listeners, with the option of interaction by chat through the Zoom platform, which will take place on Saturday, May 22 at 4:00 p.m.

Within this same programmatic line, there is a cycle of three widely recognized Chilean films that will be screened under the framework of the Chileactores initiative “Cinema to the ear”. This seeks to democratize access to works that are part of the Chilean cultural heritage through the audio-drama or radio drama format. Indeed, “El Chacal de Nahueltoro” (May 18), “Taxi para tres” (May 20) and “My best enemy” (May 22) will be broadcast on the Chilean FM radio in San Antonio.

The workshops

Finally, FECIL will dedicate itself to giving workshops within its programming. The workshop “Cinema and creation for the elderly”, aimed at workers who interact with older adults, stands out. The former will be given tools to bring the cinema closer to the elderly in a horizontal, practical and didactic way. This program is taught by the Zero in Conduct Program of the School of Film and Television of the University of Chile, has space for 11 people and will be offered through Zoom. The sessions of this workshop will be held (always at 7:00 p.m.) on May 13, 18, 20, 25, 27 and June 1. The presentation of the final works will be on Thursday, June 10.

Additionally, the Valparaíso “Recovered Cinema” initiative will give the workshop “History of Chilean cinema and history of animated cinema”, through which knowledge about national cinema from an aesthetic perspective will be delivered, in addition to the world history of Chilean cinema. animation. It is focused on education professionals interested in the subject. The available places are for 30 people. The modules will be held, always at 7:00 p.m., on May 12, 14, 19 and 21, through the Zoom platform.
