Search Underway for Missing Submarine Near Titanic Wreckage off Coast of Southeastern Canada

U.S. and Canadian authorities are conducting a search for a missing submarine off the coast of southeastern Canada. The submarine, named the Titan, disappeared while taking tourists to explore the wreckage of the Titanic. The U.S. Coast Guard reported that there was one pilot and four passengers on board, and it is unclear whether the vessel is still underwater or has surfaced and is unable to communicate.

Ships and planes from both countries have been deployed to the area, approximately 900 miles east of Cape Cod, to search for the missing submarine. Sonar buoys have been dropped to monitor the depths of the ocean, and efforts are being made to reach out to commercial vessels for assistance. The U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger stated that conducting a search in the remote area is a challenge.

OceanGate Expeditions, the private company that operates the submarine, has stated that they are mobilizing all options to rescue those on board. Among the passengers are British billionaire Hamish Harding and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son, Suleman. The Dawood family has requested prayers for their safety.

The expedition, which costs $250,000 per person, starts in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and heads approximately 400 miles into the Atlantic to the wreckage site of the Titanic. Passengers board the Titan, a five-person submersible, to descend to the depths of the ocean where the Titanic rests.

The Titanic sank in 1912 on its maiden voyage after striking an iceberg, resulting in the loss of more than 1,500 lives. The story of the Titanic has been immortalized in various forms of media, including books and the 1997 blockbuster movie.

Authorities are continuing their search efforts to locate the missing submarine and ensure the safety of those on board.
