The man is described as a hiker, but not very mountain-accustomed, says operations manager Tatjana Knappen in the West police district to Bergens Tidende.
The family contacted the police around 6 pm on Thursday, after a day had passed without them having made contact with the man.
– We sent out a patrol that started looking at Vettisfossen in Øvre Årdal, where he had said he was going. But we did not find him there, says Knappen.
A few hours later, however, his car was found at an excursion point by Flotvatnet on Bjørgavegen between Lærdal and Aurland. The police are therefore searching the area.
At 9.50 pm, the Main Rescue Center sent out a rescue helicopter, which will fly over the area with a heat-seeking camera.
The man is on holiday in the area, and the police thus do not expect the man to be known in the area, says operations manager Knappen to Bergensavisen , who first mentioned the case.
