Search for missing Miami halted in the run-up to demolition of remnant apartment building

Rescuers have halted the search for missing people believed to be buried under the rubble of the collapsed apartment building near Miami. Preparations are now underway to demolish what remains of the unstable building before Tropical Storm Elsa reaches Florida.

Construction workers drill holes in the foundation to place explosives. That is a risky job: according to the fire service, there is a chance that the building will collapse during drilling. As a precaution, rescuers have therefore temporarily suspended the search. Possibly the rest of the flat could be knocked down on Sunday.

Florida Governor DeSantis says it would be wise to demolish the shaky building. “That will protect our search teams, because we don’t know when the building could fall over. The wind gusts that are expected could create a very dangerous situation.”

Once the building is demolished, the debris is removed. The intention is to provide search teams with access to the flat’s garage. It is expected that many bodies lie there.

Two more bodies were found in the rubble last day, bringing the death toll to 24. 121 people are still missing.
