Search for friends missing since 1974 takes longer than expected | NOW

The search for the two friends who have been missing since 1974 will resume on Tuesday. The police actually hoped to be able to provide more clarity about the matter this week, but excavating sand under the water was more difficult than expected.

Last Tuesday, the police started a search for Piet Hölskens and Hans Martens from Asten. The duo disappeared after a night out 46 years ago. Despite several searches, the then 22-year-old Hölskens and 21-year-old Martens were never seen again.

The pair may have been buried under the sand in a car, according to information recently provided by the private detective of the families of the missing men. That’s why the police started a new one search in the De Brink excavation in Liessel.

No car was found at the first possible location last Wednesday. “A large coiled steel cable was found under the sand,” said the police. “However, this had nothing to do with the missing pair of Astense.”

Another location was searched on Thursday and Friday. However, removing the sand under water was more difficult than expected, so that the expected end time could not be safely achieved.

The police therefore decided to continue the search on Tuesday. It is expected that that day it will become clear what is buried under the sand at the second location.
