The building in a town near Miami partially collapsed on the night of June 23-24. Only in the first hours after the disaster were survivors rescued from the rubble. Rescuers nevertheless continued to search for victims. A total of 13,000 tons of rubble was searched.
Authorities announced today that all victims found were killed instantly as a result of the collapse of the building. The responsible fire chief Alan Cominsky thanked the firefighters who searched for survivors day and night.
Shortly after the disaster, it became clear that a 2018 study already pointed to construction damage to the complex. The damage was in the concrete under the pool, which had deteriorated because the pool was no longer watertight. There were also cracks and holes in the pillars in the parking garage under the building.
The repair work was estimated at $15 million, but due to a conflict between the owners of the property and the rental agency, nothing was done about the damage.
