Search Continues for Missing 2-Year-Old Wynter Cole Smith in Lansing

UPDATE: 9:15 p.m.

LANSING — Lansing police have announced that they will be holding a press conference at 10 p.m. tonight at City Hall to provide an update on the case of missing 2-year-old Wynter Cole Smith. Wynter went missing from her home on BeauJardin Drive on Sunday, and police have not released any additional information at this time.

In the original story, police conducted searches in various areas on Wednesday, including roadway shoulders and wooded areas near the Red Cedar River and U.S. 127. They believe that Wynter was kidnapped after her mother was stabbed by a man late Sunday night. The suspect, Rashad Trice, was arrested in St. Clair Shores on Monday. Wynter’s mother has been released from the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Since Wynter’s disappearance, search parties have formed in the Lansing area and Detroit, with over 50 people signing up with a nonprofit organization to assist in the search. The Dock Ellis Foundation, which focuses on assisting minority missing persons cases, has coordinated searches with the family, Lansing Police, and the FBI.

Derrica Wilson, co-founder of the Black and Missing Foundation, emphasized the need to look everywhere and think outside the box in the search for Wynter. She noted that the need is greater for minority children, as their disappearances may not receive as much attention outside of the state.

Lansing resident Synquiss Antes has organized searches with a team of people, starting at the Greater Lansing Veterinary Clinic in Williamston and searching the shoulders and medians of Interstate 96. Antes urged her team to be prepared with fully-charged phones, water, protective gear, and proper footwear.

Lansing Police and the FBI have provided approximate times for Trice’s travel to St. Clair Shores, including stops in Lansing, Genoa Township, Lathrup Village, Southfield, and Detroit. Trice was eventually arrested in St. Clair Shores after a brief chase and car crash.

The investigation into Wynter’s disappearance is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI or Lansing Police. The public is asked to refrain from spreading rumors on social media.
