Where did Paul McCartney’s original and iconic Höfner bass go? The former Beatles member’s instrument has been lost for decades, but now a global search has begun to track down the bass guitar.
The search was triggered after a recent conversation between McCartney and Dick Wass, the author of a book about the missing Höfner bass, reports the BBC. The two worked closely together on the book.
McCartney’s bass has been described as “the most important in history”. He used the left-handed butterfly model on many of The Beatles’ recordings. As far as he can remember, the instrument disappeared after filming Get Backthe legendary farewell concert on a roof in 1969.
McCartney bought the Höfner in Germany in 1961 for the equivalent of 35 euros. You can only guess at the current value, but the search has no commercial motive, it is reported.
Two journalists help Wass with the search. “Probably whoever has it now doesn’t even know what it has,” says one of them. The search already yielded some “exciting clues” in the first 48 hours.
