Hours of search and mystery are lived in southern Argentina with the disappearance of Elio Torres, a 42-year-old lawyer who began a solo journey through the Miter Peninsula, southeast of Tierra del Fuego, on July 16.
This Friday, volunteer brigade members departed from the city of Ushuaia in two helicopters from a private company to find Elio who last communicated with his family and has not heard from him for almost a month. These rescuers are the first authorized to travel to the Protected Natural Area of Tierra del Fuego outside the official operation carried out by members of public security agencies in the province and the Argentine Navy.
On one of the flights he travels Jose Luis Orellanadirector of a search and rescue team in the city of Punta Arenas, in Chile, accompanied by Gaiaa dog trained for this type of operation that in the last two operations she participated in obtained good results.
The other group is made up of two people from the Rio Grande City, whose identities were not released.
Elio Torres, father of two young children and a resident of Río Grande, began a journey of about 400 kilometers 27 days ago and of great technical complexity, which includes walking through peat bogs, crossing mighty rivers, going up and down mountains, going around cliffs and facing the severe climatic conditions of the area, characterized by ice and snow in winter.
“Getting to Bahía Thetis, which is where the volunteers will descend, takes about two hours of travel and depends on the weather conditions. The idea is that they remain there for ten days until they can be picked up again.”
Helicopter company sources explained.
For this adventure, the lawyer carries a satellite intercom that allows him to send predetermined messages or emails from anywhere, without the need for a telephone signal, and that indicates the georeferenced position of the device every time it is turned on.
