Sean Shibe: Opening the “Liepājas Mākslas forum” with Innovative Variations on Acoustic and Electric Guitar

The musician will open the modern art festival “Liepājas Mākslas forum” organized by the “Lielais dzintars” concert hall, by first playing the “Neparasts” program – innovative variations of contemporary and ancient pieces on acoustic and electric guitar.

Sean Schiebe creates imaginative concert programs that stand out for their deep musicality and passionate interpretation of the classics. He is the leader of the new generation of guitarists – the first guitarist to be selected BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists project, receiving two for their entries Gramophone and Opus Klassik awards. For his ability to combine music genres and eras in an unusual way, thereby promoting the popularity of the classical guitar, the musician received the Leonard Bernstein Award in 2022 (Leonard Bernstein) award. It should be mentioned that it is the first time that this award has been given to a guitarist.

The versatile musician created the electric and acoustic guitar program “Unusual” for the opening concert of the festival (Out there). It masterfully combines compositions by prominent modern and ancient composers, which speak of spirituality, mysticism and spiritualism.

The concert will feature the innovators and heavyweights of the 20th century – Olivier Messiaens (Olivier Messiaen), Julius Eastman (Julius Eastman), Sofia Gubaiduļina (Sofia Gubaidulina), Agustīns Barrjosa Mangore (Augustine Neighborhoods Mangoré) –, the founder of minimalism, Steve Reich (Steve Reich) and genre synthesizer Julie Wolff (Julia Wolfe), as well as composers of the past – classicist Johann Sebastian Bach (Johann Sebastian Bach) and the medieval author, mystic Hildegard of Bingen (Hildegard von Bingen).

One of the most exciting pieces that will be played on the electric guitar in the program will be Steve Reich’s “Electric Counterpoint”. According to the author, Shawn Shibe’s interpretation of this piece is one of the best ever performed. ”The way he plays the emphasized full-length sounds throughout, especially in the slow part, creates a hitherto unheard-of generous landscape of harmonies. The balance or “mix” created by him is amazing – it highlights all the middle voices and accompaniments in relief from the beginning to the end. His guitar selection is also perfect,” admits Steve Reich.

Sean Shibe is a versatile and innovative guitarist who has won high critical acclaim. Šibe has performed on the stages of major festivals and cultural venues, including London’s Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam concert hall and Southbank Center in London. His repertoire extends from 17th century Bach suites for lute to new works by contemporary composers. In his latest album Lost & Found he has included a repertoire of various composers recorded with electric guitar.

From September 29 to October 1, the festival “Liepājas Mākslas forum’23” will celebrate diversity in art and society, offering culture lovers eight different events in four locations in the city. we will experience a virtuoso guitar playing, a rave in the concert hall, the interweaving of ancient sutartina chants with contemporary dance, circus performances, avant-garde flamenco and a musical performance of our own place. Let’s listen to the distant, sonorous Americans the chapel in the voices, and in the awe-inspiring voices of the nearby, lonely seniors.
