Seagate’s HAMR Technology: Revolutionizing Data Storage in Data Centers and Beyond

At least Seagate, which has been working on a new technology called HAMR for several years, is counting on it. It is an abbreviation of the English heat assisted magnetic recording, which can be translated as magnetic recording with thermal assistance.

The name perfectly expresses the practical functionality of the discs. The new technology allows for the heating of a specific write location using miniature lasers to 400 °C, but only for less than a nanosecond. Thanks to this, denser writing is possible through the classic magnetic field on the plates.

Fast SSD drives are already outselling hard drives

From data centers to users

The first disks with HAMR technology are already available on store shelves, but do not look for them in ordinary e-shops with IT equipment. These models are not aimed primarily at ordinary users, but at professional use in data centers.

However, these are models with a capacity of 30 TB. Seagate said it expects the first drive to boast the aforementioned 100TB capacity in 2025. Of course, using such capacity in data centers will not be a problem.

While 100 TB may seem absurdly large to the average user these days, things will probably be different in a few years. Uncompressed video recordings with an extremely fine 8K resolution can easily take up hundreds of GB of data on the disk.

SSD drives are smaller and more expensive

Despite the growing popularity of fast SSD drives, classic hard drives will still have their place in the market. SSD drives are good for running the operating system quickly, but they are too expensive for data storage.

According to the shopping guide Zboží.cz the currently cheapest SSD unit with a capacity of 4 TB can be purchased for CZK 4,650. A hard disk (HDD) with the same capacity costs CZK 1,815. In other words, this means that SSD drives are almost three times more expensive.

For your interest: a HDD with a capacity of 22 TB currently costs 10,000 CZK, while just a few months ago the cheapest model with such a capacity was offered for four thousand more.

It won’t work without fast SSDs. Game developers consider them a necessity
