“Sea Rescue Saves 38 Castaways in Strait of Pas-de-Calais, Three with Hypothermia”

An intervention was carried out this Thursday by sea rescue to help a boat in difficulty in the Strait of Pas-de-Calais.

An assistance and rescue operation at sea was carried out this Thursday in the Strait of Pas-de-Calais, said the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea in a press release. A total of 38 people were rescued during this operation.

Three people in hypothermia

The 38 castaways were in difficulty off Oye-Plage (Pas-de-Calais) while she was on board a precarious boat whose transom was torn off, specifies the prefecture.

The migrants, three of whom were in hypothermia, were picked up by the ship Esvagt Charlie. This support and security vessel, belonging to the Sea Owl company, joined the surveillance system set up in the Strait of Pas-de-Calais in early April. Chartered by the State, it is one of the two nautical resources requested by the Prime Minister to enable six ships to be on SAR alert in this maritime sector.

Once docked, all the castaways were taken care of by the Pas-de-Calais firefighters and the border police.

In his press release, the maritime prefect of the Channel and the North Sea “warns anyone who plans to cross the Channel about the risks involved”.

He recalls that the sector is very busy “with more than 400 merchant ships passing through it per day” and “often difficult” weather conditions.
